October 4, 2018, Thursday

The Newport Fire Department came to visit today in the morning.  They talked to the children about fire safety and then we practiced our first fire drill. Our meeting place is in the school parking lot across the street.  We found more firemen and a firetruck in the parking lot when we went outside for the drill.  The children were very excited to climb in the truck and explore the equipment that firefighters use.  It is an invaluable service that the Newport Fire Department performs, visiting with children, presenting themselves in full gear and teaching them not to be afraid of a firefighter in full gear.  Thank you to the Newport Fire Department!

After their visit we played in the school yard for a bit.

Our morning workshop tables were play dough, painting, monster teeth and moon sand.  Our snack was hummus and pretzels and cut red grapes.

Today we did a bunch of math work.  We cut apples, counted the seeds, practiced writing the number of seeds.  Then we baked the apple in dough with cinnamon and sugar for a delicious dessert after lunch.  Some of us also made our block houses for our stick families.  What a delight to see all the different houses styled from different materials!

We ended our day outdoors.
