Today was a very special day. We harvested our sugar pumpkin from the garden. It has been mentioned here on the blog before. The pumpkin was regenerated from a pumpkin that we watched rot last school year. This is the first time in the history of EDS that we have had a pumpkin grow back. We have always tried, but have never born fruit. We call it pumpkin Jack after a beloved story here at school. The children decided, after hearing the story, that they wanted to watch the pumpkin rot and plant the seeds left at the end of the season. Today was the day, as the vine was rotting and there were little chew marks in the skin of the pumpkin. We figured we better pick it before a squirrel decides to make it a feast!
Our morning workshop tables were Halloween stamping, corn cob painting, beading, corn stalk cutting. We are building a corn maze backdrop for our farmer's market dramatic play area. We stuffed a scarecrow today in our Scarecrow sensory bin. We also had a jack-o-lantern pot with beans and rice sensory bin. There is all kinds of seasonal fun going on in the classroom!
At morning meeting we talked about the special events ahead of us. We learned a new song that we hope to sing at the Pumpkins On Parade party. We introduced the Letter T.
Our snack was broccoli and cucumbers with hummus and ranch and Pirate Booty bags. After snack we gathered for a Fire Dog story, read our firefighter poem and acted it out.
Our work centers were color science, mixing red and yellow paint to make orange all the while painting a giant pumpkin to decorate our classroom. We continued working on stick families. They are almost finished! We also worked in our HWT (Handwriting Without Tears) workbook. We practiced writing the letter T and coloring a turtle.
We ended our day outside.
