Today we performed our blubber paw science experiment. We all wondered just how Polar Bears can survive swimming in the Arctic Ocean. We know that if we tried to swim in those icy waters that we would become people popsicles! We remembered from our Arctic facts book that Polar Bears and many other Polar animals have blubber in their bodies. So we created our own frozen Arctic
Ocean and a big blubber paw and set out to test the waters. First we stuck our people paw into the icy water. We did not want to keep it in the water for very long, that is for sure! Then we put on our blubber paw and stuck it in the icy water....and .... no problem! You could not even feel the cold water. Imagine that.
The children also wanted to investigate the blubber...just what was that stuff? Real blubber is hard to come by in these parts, so we simulated blubber using Crisco.
We read the story THE THREE SNOW BEARS and retold it together using story pieces. We discussed how this story was the same and how it was different from SANTA AND THE THREE BEARS and THE THREE BEARS stories.
Today we all did some journaling...that is a J word. We are studying the letter J. We did jumping jacks at circle too.
Math exercise of one-to-one correspondence using our snowballs.
It was too soggy to go outside today. We had a wonderful time playing in the library.
Whee!
