CATERPILLAR WATCH: DAY 4
If you worked on Ms. Bridget's garden papers, please bring them to our Zoom meeting.
We thank you for another incredible special delivery! You all are amazing. You sure are providing a bunch of smiles and happiness!
STORY TIME
This is one of our favorite stories. It speaks to the idea that when you plant a seed and care for it, you are not guaranteed a growing plant. You must have hope and faith.
GODLY PLAY
Zipper begins with the letter Z. Can you zipper your coat or sweater? Practice using a zipper.
Can you make a Z out of sticks you find in your yard, or any other straight objects in your house?
The Shape of the Month is a diamond. A diamond shape is a rhombus. A rhombus has 4 equal sides and opposite parallel lines.
Which traffic signs pictured below are diamond shaped? While you are out riding in your car, can you spy some of these diamond shaped signs?
A kite is a diamond shape. Can you make your own kite out of a piece of paper? Draw a diamond shape on an 81/2 x 11 piece of paper, or larger. Cut it out. Attach a tail of yarn or rope. Color it. Fly it in the backyard.
The Number of the week is 6.
Practice writing the number 6, tracing the number 6, or form the 6 with small stones or dough.
All insects have 6 legs. Take a look at this ladybug and count its legs. Can you draw a lady bug with 6 legs?
This week's card trick, find the number 6 card with a diamond shape on it.
SCIENCE:
We are going to be watching the life cycle of a butterfly. We have read and talked about the story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. What do you already know about a butterfly?
On Friday we put some celery stalks in three different colored glasses of water. "What do you think will happen to the stalks of celery?" was our question. Monday we saw that the leaves turned the color of the water that they were standing in. We learned a new vocabulary word, xylem. Xylem transports water and nutrients up from the roots to the leaves and plant body. Our celery stalk drew the colored water up from the bottom of the glass and transported it to the leaves. This experiment proves how the xylem functions.
You may work on Ms. Bridget's Lesson No. 2 pages. They were previously sent by email. We will share them on our Thursday Zoom meeting.
Below is a picture of our caterpillars that arrived on Monday, May 4. We will watch them grow for 7 days, they will eat, and eat and eat and wiggle. After about 7 days, they will spin their chrysalises.
This butterfly schedule has the dates at the top, the numbers in the squares are the number of days for each stage. We are currently on day 3 of our caterpillar stage watching them eat and grow. Around day 7 they will crawl to the top and spin a chrysalis. That will need 3 days to harden. Then we wait 7 to 10 days for them to emerge from their chrysalis as a butterfly. We are hopeful this will happen before our last Zoom meeting. If they have not, we will schedule a viewing! It is all up to Mother Nature.
Make a butterfly headband with 2 antennae. Talk about what a butterfly uses their antennae for. Butterflies use their antennae to:
Find nectar. They do not have a nose. They use their antennae and receptors on their legs to find nectar in plants.
They also sense light with their antennae. They can tell the time of day, and day from night, by sensing the position of the sun.
They help them fly in the right direction by sensing the direction that the wind is blowing.
MUSIC or MOTOR:
We are putting together a S'more snack calendar countdown to our last Zoom meeting. The calendar creates a pattern of pieces cracker, chocolate, marshmallow, cracker, and repeat. Here is a fun song to the tune of ON TOP OF SPAGHETTI:
On top of my cracker
So yummy and sweet
I'll put on some chocolate
To make a good treat
Then comes the marshmallow
So sticky and soft
And then one more cracker
So it won't fall off
I put it together
So gently I press
If I squeeze it too hard
It will make a big mess
I'm ready to eat it
This thing called a S'more
Oh my it's so yummy
I think I'll have more!
