BUTTERFLY WATCH DAY Day 17

Draw a special summer birthday wish for all of our EDS friends that celebrate a summer birthday!

LITERACY

Make your own paper boat.  The directions are in the bonus material section below.  There are quite a few steps, so you might need help from a grown up.  This is great practice for creasing paper and fine motor exercise.

 MATH:

The Shape of the Month is a diamond.  A diamond shape is a rhombus.  A rhombus has 4 equal sides and opposite parallel lines.

A hat that is often worn for graduation is shaped like a diamond!  We are talking a lot about our EDS Graduation this week.









We have studied the numbers 1 to 10.  For your information, we also made a special numbers book that is in your portfolio book that you will get after graduation day.  The teachers put extra pages in there for you to complete your special book over the summer if you wish, since we were not able to finish this project together.
 

This week on a half of sheet of paper, you could practice writing, tracing, or identifying the numbers 1 to 10.  If you write them, you could add this page to your number book.

 SCIENCE: Today is Day 17 on our Butterfly watch.  I wonder if  the last caterpillar has spun their chrysalis!

Day 15 One caterpillar at the top has knocked down one of the chrysalises circled in red at the bottom.  It will be fine.  Hopefully the caterpillar will spin its chrysalis and leave the others alone.


This butterfly schedule has the dates at the top. The numbers in the squares are the number of days for each stage.  We are currently on day 17  and currently have 4 chrysalises and 1 caterpillar taking its time. The chrysalises need 3 days to harden.  Then we wait 7 to 10 days for them to emerge from their chrysalis as a butterfly.  The green dots show where we are now.  We are 3 days off of our projected time frame.  We may not see butterflies until around May 28.   It is all up to Mother Nature.  I will send out a Zoom invite for those that want to watch the butterfly release.



This is the Painted Lady Butterfly.  This is the kind of butterfly that will emerge from our chrysalises.  They are a common butterfly that lives in our country and Canada.

Butterfly fact:  Butterflies feed on nectar from flowers.  They have taste receptors on their feet!  They have six feet.  What do we taste with?

We talked about how a butterfly eats.  They have a proboscis, which is a straw-like body part on its head for sucking up nectar from a flower.


Plant studies:   We have sprouted bean plants from seed, and now we are regrowing celery! We found a very small sprout.  I wonder how much it grew over the weekend.  Check it out below.



 
 Let's try rooting the Avocado pit

 Science drawing:  Fold a piece of paper in half like a card.  On the front or top, draw a picture of a flower.  On the inside, underneath, draw a picture of a creature that might help the flower such as a bee or butterfly, or worm.  OR draw something that might eat the flower, like a caterpillar or some type of bug.  Bring it to Zoom on Tuesday and we will try to guess what is on the inside of your card when you give us clues.

BONUS MATERIAL
Visual recognition game.  Find some empty grocery boxes in your recycling bin.  Cut the fronts and backs off.  Mix them up on a table and match them back together.
